Pilot-Project Moldova Verde to “Green” Three Local Communities
Moldova Verde, a paper recycling pilot-project currently underway in Moldova, seeks to collaborate with local businesses in the capital city of Chişinău, and two other regions, Bălţi, in the north, and Cahul, in the south, in a joint effort to promote and urge more people to begin recycling their paper waste. The project, funded by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) and the Association for Creative Development (ADC), is primarily supported by teens between the ages of 16-20, who aspire to be environmental leaders within their communities, and to influence the owners of local businesses to donate the used paper for recycling.
The project is headed by four U.S. exchange program alumni, Tatiana Morari, Dorina Linga, Alona Dorosh and Rodica Mirza, who first gathered as friends to discuss pressing environmental issues looming, and then, to initiate and develop such a project. With the assistance of a grant provided by IREX and another one from ADC, the project soon moved from concept to a reality—a new ecological youth project in Moldova.
During the weekend of March 31 - April 1, the project leaders underwent an intense two-day management workshop, which saw the students learn how to become effective leaders and negotiators, and included a series of team-building trainings to assist them in their efforts to lead a successful recycling campaign all across Moldova. After the funding was secured, about 30 teenagers, approximately ten from each of the three regions in Moldova, committed to assist with the project. During the selection process, the project required an application and short personal description from each teen, which began in mid-March. Each teen submitted a formal request, and all were subsequently interviewed, and finally invited to become official Moldova Verde project leaders of their community.
The end goal of the project is to collect all donated paper, where it will then be transported to a local recycling facility to be sold. With 100% of the funds raised, the project leaders will have a ceremony to commence an urban renewal and beautification process, where selected regions of Moldova will receive trees that will be planted by the team project leaders specifically in polluted or disadvantaged areas. The aim is to begin the tree planting in early May.
