Brussels & Vienna Summer School on EU Policy Making

In 2019, Analysing human security in today’s EU will be the summer school’s main theme.

The first week in BRUSSELS (1 to 7 July) emphasises the various decision-making actors and key policy areas, while also looking at issues on governance, participation and legitimacy. Lectures, discussions and exercises facilitated by academics and practitioners are complemented with study visits to EU institutions. The lectures include the following topics:

  • Introduction to the European Union
  • Introduction to human security
  • Functioning of the European institutions
  • EU decision-making procedures
  • Governance, participation and legitimacy
  • Lobbying transparency
  • Overview of select EU policy areas with a focus on human security: Internal market – Competition – Environment – Justice and home affairs – External affairs

The second week in VIENNA (7 to 12 July) builds on the first week and offers in-depth knowledge on EU policy making in a number of fields. Lectures and interactive exchanges with experts are complemented with visits to the UN, the OSCE and the EU Delegation in Vienna. The lectures address the following topics:

  • EU constitutional and legal issues
  • European foreign and security policy
  • Human rights protection in Europe
  • The EU and international organisations

Throughout the two weeks, the summer school participants will work in small groups on an assignment related to human security. The final result will take the form of a written article, video report, podcast or infographic to be presented to their peers at the end of the summer school programme. Upon attendance and active participation in the two-week programme, the participants receive a 5 ECTS certificate for participation in the summer school.

Deadlines for Applications

  • Early bird deadline: 15 March 2019.
    Applicants who submit their application by 15 March 2019 at the latest and are subsequently admitted to the programme, are eligible for a 10% discount on the tuition fee.
  • Application deadline: 1 May 2019

Tuition fee

The tuition fee for the Summer School 2019 is 1900 EUR.
This fee includes: course material, access to online platform, daily breakfast in Brussels, daily lunch in Brussels and Vienna, flight from Brussels to Vienna on Sunday 7 July 2019 and study visits.
The tuition fee does not include: accommodation, daily breakfast in Vienna, evening meals, flights to Brussels and from Vienna.

Tuition Fee Waivers

The Institute for European Studies will grant a limited amount of tuition waivers in the form of reduced tuition fees. These will be attributed on the basis of merit and motivation. They are in general, but not exclusively, granted to prospective students from economically less advanced countries. If you think you may be eligible for such a reduction, you will need to provide the following supporting documents as part of your application to the programme:

  • a motivation letter
  • a transcript of your academic records
